Where to view elk in Estes Park

Elk have become easy to spot in town, with one herd of 30 that call Estes Park home. They can be seen meandering through the streets, munching on greenery, and roaming around neighborhoods. They particularly enjoy the far north end of town with its wide-open spaces, perfect for grazing.

The elk love the well-manicured grounds of the Estes Park Golf Course. Located alongside Lake Estes, the course is often dotted with elk laying in the grass or walking through the course. It’s quite the show for golfers and those passing by.

Lake Estes

Elk can often be seen roaming near the grassy banks of Lake Estes. Visitors enjoy the easy gravel path that circles the lake for a nice afternoon walk and some wildlife viewing.

Best places to see elk in Rocky Mountain National Park

Of course, no list on where to view elk in Estes Park is complete without mentioning Rocky Mountain National Park. The best places to see a herd of elk in Rocky Mountain National Park in the fall are where the meadows meet the forest line. So, think lower elevation and open meadows. Some of the best places include Moraine Park, Horseshoe Park, and Upper Beaver Meadows – on the east side of the park. On the west side of the park, head on over to the Kawuneeche Valley for a chance to see an elk herd and even moose, who also frequent the valley.

Tips for viewing elk

  • The morning and evening are prime viewing times.
  • Be quiet. Keep conversations at a minimum, turn car engines off and be as still as you can be.
  • Keep your distance. Safe viewing for elk is around 75 ft. Any closer you risk disturbing the elk and risking your safety.
  • It is illegal to use calls to view or attract wildlife. Be patient you will see one!
