Visit Estes Park and explore the area’s winter activities, such as snowshoeing. From beginner to expert, we have highlighted a few of our favorite snowshoe trails in Rocky Mountain National Park. Happy trails!
Start off easy
Bear Lake
The ultimate trail for beginners or those that want a little practice run in before heading off into the mountains! This trail is just under a mile with very minimal elevation gain. If you are feeling good and want to add on, Odessa Lake is a great option. The 8.9-mile trek features 1,900 ft. of elevation gain and beautiful views of Longs Peak.
Nymph Lake
Extending from Bear Lake is the 1.1-mile Nymph Lake trail. The relatively flat route is ideal for beginners. Lake and mountain views are endless and easy add-ons include Emerald and Dream Lakes.
Sprague Lake
Another loop trail around a lake, Sprague Lake Loop is less than a mile with minimal elevation gain. Take in panoramic views of the Continental Divide and perfect reflections in the lake’s smooth waters. It’s picture-perfect without all the work!
Now you’re getting the hang of it
Gem Lake
This snowshoe trail in Rocky Mountain National Park is a real gem. The moderate 3.5-mile trail is found at the Lumpy Ridge Trailhead. Trekkers will enjoy stunning panoramic views as they gain 1,000 feet in elevation.
Cub Lake
A popular hike in the summer as well, Cub Lake comes in at just under five miles and only features 500 ft. of elevation gain. It’s a great moderate trail for those who are familiar with snowshoeing but looking for a little extra challenge.
Now I know what I am doing
Sky Pond Trail
The Sky Pond trail sits at 8.4 miles, out and back, with an elevation gain of 1,683 ft. The trail offers trekkers some of the best views in the park but not without a little effort. Pack your camera to snap photos from frozen waterfalls to pristine alpine lakes and scenic vista views. This trail begins at the Glacier Gorge trailhead.
Black Lake
Black Lake also begins its strenuous 9.6-mile mile climb at Glacier Gorge trailhead. This route features 1,480 ft. of elevation gain and runs along popular sights in the park, such as Alberta Falls.
Mills Lake
Another trail that leaves from the Glacier Gorge area is Mills Lake. The 5.3-mile, roundtrip hike only includes 780 ft. in elevation gain, but in a short amount of time. This is the same route leading to Black Lake, but the final destination is much closer.
