A Guide to Observing Wildlife in Rocky Mountain National Park

Observing wildlife in Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the top attractions for visitors to this vast preserve. It’s something that can be done without even knowing it when hiking, backpacking, or fishing! It’s home to an abundance of animals, birds, and water creatures. If you’re looking to feast your eyes on one of these Rocky Mountain residents, here’s the guide to spotting them.

Elk

Not only do Elk make areas of Estes Park their home, but their homeland is also right in Rocky Mountain National Park! In the summer, you’ll most likely spot them above the tree at dawn and dusk.

Bighorn Sheep

Bighorn Sheep are very likely to be seen during the summer, and they reside mostly in Sheep Lakes. They like lower-level areas, so it’s not too difficult to spot them. Always make sure to keep a safe distance between yourself and the horned creatures; you don’t want to be rammed by those horns!

Moose

Make your way to the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park to spot a majestic moose! They’re typically grazing on some grass near the willow trees in Kawuneeche Valley, the East Inlet, and the Onahu trail.

Mule Deer

Just like elk, mule deer are very likely to be seen while exploring Rocky Mountain National Park. Head over to the open areas within the park, and you’ll be able to see them in their herd. Like regular deer, males have antlers, and females do not.

Picas

While it’s common to see large woodland creatures like elk, moose, and mule deer, smaller animals are also common. Picas reside in the higher-level areas and congregate on rock formations. They have a very distinct bark, so make sure you’re really listening for them!

Birds

Make sure your binoculars are handy. There are over 270 types of bird species to set your eyes on while exploring Rocky Mountain National Park. Hike over to the more wooded areas of the parks, and you’ll be able to see the various feathered friends in the Rocky Mountains.
